Two years ago, we started following three people who had made the same unusual decision: to disappear from the data economy. We did not know what we would find. We did not know if the film would work.
Now we know. We have locked picture.
The edit took eight months. We had over 400 hours of footage — interviews, observational sequences, screen recordings, archival material. Getting from 400 hours to 94 minutes required making choices that were sometimes painful. There are scenes we love that are not in the film. There are moments we captured that we will probably never show anyone.
What remains is, we think, the film we set out to make. Quiet. Unsettling. Honest about the costs of what our subjects have chosen — and honest about the costs of what the rest of us have not.
We are now in post-production: sound design, color grade, score. We are working with a composer whose work you may know from other documentaries in this space. We will announce that collaboration soon.
